Johnny King

Johnny Cecil King (born 2 July 1942, in Gilgandra, New South Wales) is an Australian former rugby league footballer and coach. He was a winger with the St. George Dragons for the last seven years of their eleven consecutive premiership-winning run from 1956 to 1966. He was a representative in the Australian national team from 1966–1970, earning 15 Test caps. He has been named among the nation's finest footballers of the 20th century.

Early life

King's early life alternated between Sydney and north western New South Wales. His father, Cec King, was a motor mechanic who had stints working at Gulgong, Gilgandra and Gulargambone. Cec King, had played 19 matches for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in reserves and first grade in 1943 and 1944. Johnny King was an apprentice jeweller at aged 16 in Gilgandra before moving to Sydney to continue his trade. In 1958 he joined the Arncliffe Scots D grade junior rugby league side as a fullback and the following year played in the St George Dragons' Presidents Cup side. He trialled with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 1959 but was turned down by coach Bernie Purcell.

Johnny King (8 January 1912 — 6 March 1963 (aged 51)) born in Manchester, was an English professional fly/bantam/feather/lightweight boxer of the 1920s, '30s and '40s who won the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) Northern (England) Area bantamweight title, BBBofC British bantamweight title, and British Empire bantamweight title, and was a challenger for BBBofC British featherweight title against Nel Tarleton, and International Boxing Union (IBU) World bantamweight title against Panama Al Brown, his professional fighting weight varied from 84 lb (38 kg; 6 st 0 lb), i.e. flyweight to 130 lb (59 kg; 9 st 4 lb), i.e. featherweight.

John "Johnny" King (5 November 1926 – 11 January 2010) was an English-born footballer who played as a wing half for Leicester City in the 1940s and 1950s.

He was born in Great Gidding and first played for Peterborough United before joining Leicester in September 1943. He made 197 Football League appearances and played for the Foxes in the 1949 FA Cup Final, and remained with the club until July 1955.

John William "Johnny" King (born 9 August 1932) is a former English footballer who played in the Football League for Cardiff City, Crewe Alexandra and Stoke City.

King began his career with his local side Crewe Alexandra in 1950. He formed a good partnership with Frank Blunstone and the pair were highly wanted by other clubs. King joined Stoke City for £8,000 and soon began to show his worth. He spent eight seasons at the Victoria Ground making 311 appearances scoring 113 goals to became one of the club's greatest goalscorers. He later played for Cardiff City and made a return to his home town team, Crewe Alexandra.

Career

King was regarded as a natural goalscorer and despite his rather 'chunky' build was a fast runner. He started his career at his local side Crewe Alexandra, at Crewe he partnered Frank Blunstone who was later capped by England. When Blunstone left for Chelsea King decided to join Stoke City who were at the time in the Second Division. He immediately began to score goals and quickly became a firm fan favourite. He was a regular goalscorer season after season at Stoke and became one a few Stoke players to have score over one hundred League goals.
